The Essence of an Orgy: What It Means

Introduction

Orgy is a word that most men dream off. It normally is defined as drunken revelry followed by unrestrained cohabitation between 3 or more persons. Men will always fantasize about an orgy with women. Orgy is an ancient word and is derived from the Latin word Orgia. One can thus conclude the word being so old, it is something that must have existed for many centuries. One can say the orgies were part of ancient rituals. They sometimes served a definite purpose like appeasement to the weather god for rain or fertility of women. It was also a form of revelry and was a celebration of an event like the arrival of spring.

The orgy had a definite place in Pagan culture and was something which was looked forward to, but in the west. the arrival of Christianity made an orgy an ‘evil’ act and a veneer of puritanism crept in. But in the East, in particular. an orgy continued to have a place. It was given a cover of a method to achieve nirvana. This is the essence of Tantra and the latest exponent of the orgy with all its finesse was Acharya Rajneesh.

Essence of an Orgy

The word orgy as such does not exist in Hinduism, but the act itself is sanctified by scriptures. The orgy is practiced by the Shaivites who are worshipers of the god Kaal Bhairov, who is the severe manifestation of Lord Shiva, the foremost of Hindu deities who is part of the trilogy of supreme manifestation of power in Hinduism.

Tantra in Hinduism never uses the word orgy. However. something akin to an orgy is practiced by the Aghori when they fornicate with mantra and chants in the middle of the night. There is a subtle difference from the old pagan forms of an orgy and alcohol is generally eschewed. Though an orgy specifically includes drunken revelry

Talking about a personal experience, I can say that it was not what I thought it would be. To fantasize about it is one thing but to have a practical experience a is another thing. During one of my visits to the erstwhile Soviet Union, my friend a young lass suggested an orgy with some of her friends. I accepted more out of curiosity than anything else.

The orgy was in a large hall with a bar counter at one end. There were in all six of us and I was the only Indian. I will say that it lasted until early hours of the morning, but somehow I just slept it off. I found orgies more part of fantasy than any benefit in real life.

However, an episode at the ashram of Acharya Rajneesh was an entirely different experience. There was no wine or alcohol, but it started as meditation exercise and slowly built up into unrestrained acts between the men and women. In fact, the way it went it was perhaps one of the most elevating things in my life. But a combination of circumstances made me drop further experiments at the ashram. My CO became aware of my entry into the Ashram and as service members of the Armed forces are forbidden to join such ashram or activity, he forbade me expressly and also warned that another such foray would result in disciplinary action. So that was that, but I can say that Acharya Rajneesh certainly had something to offer in his meditation sessions. It should not be confused with sensual pleasures but a deep philosophy which Rajneesh had lifted straight from the ancient Hindu granths.

Last Word

Orgy has been part of the human race since time immemorial. It certainly had a sexual connotation, but rituals were devised that gave a religious cover to such acts of revelry. Unknown to the participants at that time there was the release of tremendous energy and that in most cases did affect everyday life. I cannot say, but it is my belief that perhaps they did affect the cosmic laws as well. As per tantra in all such acts there is the tremendous release of energy and in case it is channelized, one can achieve wonders. I was once a member of an ashram of swami Shraddanand, but I never took part in his rituals that included tantric acts and cohabitation with women. But participants mentioned that could see their past births during the acts. Was it a hallucination? I don’t think so if you believe in rebirth as Hinduism does.

Where is the orgy in the modern world? It is there but is mostly secretive as such acts cannot be publicly condoned. Hindu philosophy is different, yet it does not advocate mass forms of cohabitation and says that such acts are only for a few who believe in and want to reach nirvana. But an orgy once in a way can be an excellent release of emotions, but one will have to leave prejudice and puritan thoughts behind.
